Belarus: 17.11.2010 EU recommendation to start negotiations with Belarus

The European Commission has recommended that the Council authorize the Commission to open negotiations on agreements for facilitation of procedures on short-stay visas and on readmission between the EU and Belarus.

According to the EU Delegation in Belarus, visa facilitation is a very important issue for the citizens of the country, since it would allow them to obtain cheaper visas with less difficulties.

Signed readmission agreement would ensure that Belarusians, who stay in EU countries illegally, can safely return to their home country.

Delegation’s press release listed proposed facilitations, such as long-term multiple-entry visas for bona fide travellers, reducing or cancelling fees for processing certain categories of visas, restricting time for processing applications and possibly exempting holders of diplomatic passports from the visa obligation. These steps should make the visa issuing process more transparent and almost two times cheaper, which in turn can lead to improved and stronger relations between the people of Belarus and EU citizens.
