Seminar: “The Schengen Agreement in the context of international politics: a challenge for the Polish Presidency in the EU Council?”

June 28, 2011, Stefan Batory Foundation, Warsaw Jerzy Turowicz Conference room,
9:30am-1:30pm

This seminar was an excellent opportunity to discuss the current and future situation of the Schengen area. The questions that we raised during the seminar included the following: are we facing the risk of losing one of the most tangible achievements of the European integration? Would proposed changes make it easier to join the Schengen area for Bulgaria and Romania? To what extent the Polish Presidency is going to defend the Schengen area – as it was promised by minister Mikołaj Dowgielewicz? To what extent the proposed changes to the Schengen Agreement are well-considered instruments of the EU migration policy?

The panelists included Monika Trojanowska (Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University), Maciej Duszczyk (Warsaw University) Robert Rybicki (an independent expert), Tomasz Dąborowski (Centre for Eastern Studies) and Janusz Gąciarz (Permanent Representation of the Republic of Poland to the EU).
