On Tuesday, October 11, the new Visa Information System (VIS) started operations.
It will make exchange of data on short-stay visas among Schengen countries quicker and more effective.

Thanks to the introduction of VIS visa applications will be processed faster due to the use of biometrics, such as fingerprints and a digital facial image, which will accelerate the identification of visa holders and help to avoid identity theft. This is one of the reasons why introducing biometric travel documents is required from countries wishing to obtain facilitations in visa regime with the EU.

The VIS is believed to “reinforce the integrity of the system and strengthen trust among its member states”. The first consular posts to be connected to the system are located in Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia.

While explaining benefits of the new, improved system, Cecilia Malmström, EU Home Affairs Commissioner, said: ” This is a big step towards improving and modernising the common EU visa policy.”
