Schengen states have the right to reintroduce border controls

EU countries may temporarily reintroduce border controls within the Schengen visa-free in the case of a large influx of illegal immigrants.

On Thursday, the Interior Ministers of the 27 European countries unanimously supported the decision. EU High Representative for domestic policy, Cecilia Malmström stated that “disappointed” the results of voting. As stated in the document adopted by the 26 countries that make up the Schengen area, will be able to reintroduce border control at up to a year in “exceptional circumstances”. Earlier, France and Germany were called number of circumstances, the influx of illegal immigrants. Chairman of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, called the decision of the European Ministers of Internal Affairs “counterproductive” and promised to fight for its abolition.
