Moldova: The Association Agreement with the EU might enter into force by the end of 2014

The initialling of the Association Agreement with the EU at the Eastern Partnership Summit to be held in Vilnius in November and its entry into force by the end of 2014 is a realistic objective, provided that the political deadlock will not happen again and there is political stability. Moreover, Chisinau must continue working on its commitments made to the EU, in particular the fight against corruption and reform of the judiciary.

This statement was made by Speaker of Parliament Igor Corman at the „Reviews and Foreign Policy Debates” talk show produced by the Foreign Policy Association, TRIBUNA reports.

”It is very important that we keep the pace after Vilnius. Let’s not forget that the European Parliament will soon have election and the election campaign starts in May 2014. Therefore, we should be very active till that time and keep Moldova on the agenda of Brussels, so as all the decisions on the Association Agreement and the Free Trade Agreement, as well as visa liberalization, to be made by the end of 2014. This is a realistic objective, but there is a lot to be done”, Igor Corman said.

According to him, ”it is critical that we sign this agreement because we in a way anchor Moldova in the European space and this will open new opportunities for it”.

”We will need to implement our commitments commendably in the first year and after that we will be able to submit the application for membership that will be reviewed in about one year. If the Moldovan governance is efficient and pro-European, the prospects are very good and we will thus change things for better. And then will we be able to say that we made the European integration process irreversible. To make it irreversible, besides signing the Association Agreement, besides visa liberalization, the people should back the pro-European parties and governance at the next election”, added Igor Corman.
