Moldovan and Polish prime ministers tackle bilateral cooperation, EU integration

Chisinau, 9 September  – Prime Minister Iurie Leanca today invited his Polish counterpart Donald Tusk to visit Chisinau to participate in a forum on European investments. The invitation was made at a meeting between the two officials at the government’s headquarters in Warsaw. Donald Tusk said he would come to Chisinau next spring to take part in this event to attract European investments to Moldova, the government’s communication and media relations department has reported.

The prime ministers also discussed the bilateral cooperation extending in the most diverse fields and the carrying out of Moldova’s integration into the European Union. Leanca thanked for the support provided by Poland for the European integration, including within the Moldovan-Polish commission for European integration.

Following the meeting, Iurie Leanca and Donald Tusk gave a news briefing.

The Polish prime minister reiterated that Warsaw actively backs Moldova in its effort to modernise and adjust to the European standards.

“Moldova may rely on Poland’s support in the European integration process, we will shoulder up the project on visas’ liberalisation – this is an achievable objective,” the polish prime minister said.

The Polish official also said that Moldova had what to boast with in the business sector, while taking into account the economic growth carried out by Moldovan government in the first half of 2013. Donald Tusk specified that he had discussed with Iurie Leanca also the bilateral cooperation on the energy segment.

“It is in the interest of Poland and the entire Europe to connect Moldova to a common energy market. We welcome the construction of the Iasi-Ungheni gas pipeline, such projects are backed by the whole Europe and Poland will support Moldova to this end,” Donald Tusk said.

At the same time, Tusk highly appreciated the Moldovan cabinet’s endeavour to settle the Transnistrian conflict exclusively by peaceful means on the basis of the dialogue within the present formats of talks.

For his part, Iurie Leanca said Moldova further relied on Poland’s backing to achieve the major goal – European integration. He said that the initialling at the Vilnius Summit of the Association Agreement, which also includes the Free Trade Agreement, would mean that Moldova’s European integration process had acquired an irreversible character. The Moldovan prime minister stressed that Moldova would made a report on the fulfilment of the commitments in terms of the visa liberalisation at the summit due in next November.

“The most important objective after the Vilnius Summit is the signing of the Association Agreement during the present mandate of the European Commission and European Parliament,” Iurie Leanca specified.

He also said that Moldova would participate in continuation in all the initiatives of the Eastern Partnership, and next month, Chisinau would host the 5th Civil Society Forum of the Eastern Partnership.

At the same time, Iurie Leanca thanked the Warsaw authorities for the financial support provided to Moldova within the Development Assistance Programme. For 2013, the Polish side approved 24 projects worth almost 1.1 million euros for financing.

The Moldovan delegation on visit to Poland also includes Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and European Integration Minister Natalia Gherman, Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Eugen Carpov, Information Technologies and Communications Minister Pavel Filip and Labour, Social Protection and Family Minister Valentina Buliga.
