Belarus: EU member States Discussing Visa Facilitation at Diplomatic Consultations

Visa facilitation is constantly on the agenda of consultations held by the Belarusian foreign ministry with foreign ministries representing the European Union`s member states, Dzmitry Mironchyk, spokesman for the ministry, told reporters in Minsk on April 10.

He said that the matter had been discussed during recent rounds of consultations held by the ministry with the foreign ministries of Lithuania and Slovenia.

“That is why we continue working in the direction pointed out by the head of state in his address to the National Assembly and the Belarusian people in April 2013,” said Mr. Mironchyk.

The Council of the EU invited Belarus to start visa facilitation talks as far back as June 2011. However, the government ignored the invitation until the Third Eastern Partnership Summit, which was held in Vilnius in November 2013. Foreign Minister Uladzimir Makey announced at the summit that Belarus was ready to start talks with the EU on visa facilitation and readmission agreements.

The EU has already signed visa facilitation agreements with Russia and all Eastern Partnership countries except Belarus. The visa fee for the citizens of those countries has been lowered from €60 to €35.
