Poland is Closing the Consulate in Sevastopol

As of 30 September, the Polish Consulate General in Sevastopol will discontinue its operations pursuant to decision No. 77 of the Minister of Foreign Affairs on the diplomatic mission’s closure. Its tasks will be taken over by the Consulate General in Odessa.

The Ukrainian authorities agreed to including the Sevastopol Consulate’s consular district, which covers the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, in the consular district of the Consulate General in Odessa, which has territorial competence over Crimea.

The Consulate General in Sevastopol was opened in April 2011 as one of new Polish diplomatic and consular posts in Ukraine. This spring Russia carried out an annexation of Crimea, an act illegal under international law, and Ukraine has effectively lost the ability to govern this area. Owing to a prolonged inability of the Sevastopol post to fulfil its mission within the Ukrainian state, the decision has been made to close it.
