Young Athletes from Latvia, Estonia and Russia Reunited under a Cross-Border Cooperation Project

A series of sports competitions bringing together young athletes from Latvia, Estonia and Russia have been taking place in Latvia and Russia during the past two months. The events started in Smiltene, Latvia and continued in Porhov, Russia and were funded under the Estonia-Latvia-Russia Cross-Border Cooperation Programme. The young athletes competed in track and field events in three age groups.

Beside sports, all the athletes had a chance to exchange experience and knowledge during events, the possibility to learn about the sporting and cultural traditions of partner-countries, as well as to increase public awareness and understanding about sport.

The objective of the Cross Border Athletics project is to encourage children and young people in sports activities, particularly in athletics, using cross-border cooperation between Latvia and Russia as a promoter of healthy sporting competition, thereby contributing to the expansion of active life opportunities for the young generation. It also aims to develop long term cooperation among sports schools.

The Estonia-Latvia-Russia CBC Programme has supported 49 cross-border cooperation projects in the programming period 2007-2013. Its objective is to promote joint development activities for the improvement of the region’s competitiveness by using its potential at the crossroads between the EU and Russia. Specifically, it aims to make the wider border area an attractive place for both its inhabitants and businesses through activities aimed at improving living standards and investment climate.
