Tusk Urges Progress on Reforms in Talks with Georgian Prime Minister

The time has come for Georgia to advance its reforms in areas such as the rule of law and the judiciary, and make progress in fostering a political climate of respect and dialogue, president of the European Council Donald Tusk said today after meeting Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili.

Tusk said Georgia was “one of the frontrunners of the Eastern Partnership”, and that talks had focused around implementation of the Association Agreement.

“These reforms will transform and modernise Georgia. Implementing this Agreement will also help build a credible track record for the country in light of its European aspirations,”he said. They also discussed visa liberalization, on which “good progress” was being made.

Stressing EU support for Georgia’s territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders, Tusk encouraged Georgia “to reach out to the entities and pursue a two-track approach of both non-recognition and engagement”.
