A Landmark Year in EU-Georgia Relations

Last year marked a milestone in EU-Georgia relations with the signature of the Association Agreement including Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (AA/DCFTA). According to the 2015 ENP Country Progress Report, taking stock of relations over 2014, political dialogue intensified last year, with ongoing visa liberalisation talks and implementation of Visa Facilitation and Readmission Agreements.

The report said Georgia continued its democratic transition including with regard to human rights and fundamental freedoms, and with the start of constitutional and judicial reform.

In 2014, EU funding through the European Neighbourhood Instrument amounted to €131 million to support implementation of the DCFTA, justice reform, support to public institutions, development of rural business, and human rights.

Among recommendations for the year to come are greater separation of powers, justice reform, and increasing the accountability of law enforcement agencies.
