Cross-Border Cooperation to Improve Lake Peipsi between Russia and EU

An EU-funded cross-border cooperation project has carried out a number of actions in Estonia and Russia, contributing to an improvement of the environmental situation of Lake Peipsi and setting the preconditions for the development of water related tourism and an increase in water traffic. The project was part of the Estonia-Latvia-Russia Cross Border Cooperation programme.

On the Russian side, the project constructed 1 wastewater treatment plant in Palkinsky area, 3 wastewater treatment plants in Pskov city, Pskovsky area and Gdov, and wastewater treatment facilities in Pechorsky.

In Estonia, 3 boat harbours were constructed in Tartu, Mustvee and Räpina with 104 mooring places, and one slip in Kallaste for ship repairs.

The Estonia-Latvia-Russia CBC Programme has supported 49 cross-border cooperation projects in the programming period 2007-2013. Its objective is to promote joint development activities for the improvement of the region’s competitiveness by using its potential at the crossroads between the EU and Russia. Specifically, it aims to make the wider border area an attractive place for both its inhabitants and businesses through activities aimed at improving living standards and investment climate.
