European Parliament approves completion of EU-Moldova agreement on facilitation of visa issuance

The European Parliament today approved the completion of the agreement between the European Union and Moldova amending the agreement on the facilitation of the issuance of visas, the Foreign and European Integration Ministry’s media and public relations department has reported.

The agreement was signed in June 2012 by Prime Minister Vlad Filat and European Commissioner Cecilia Malmström and is meant to facilitate visa issuance for Moldovans willing to travel to the European Union states.

Thus, the agreement stipulates the simplification of the European visa issuance criteria, tax reduction or total tax exemption for several categories of Moldovans, such as: journalists, drivers providing international transport services, students, young people participating in seminars, sports and cultural events, first-degree relatives of people legally residing in the EU, etc. Also, according to the agreement, the holders of special biometric passports will be exempted from getting short stay visas.

The agreement is to be approved by the Council of the European Union in a near future, following to enter in force in two months after the EU officially informs Moldova about the completion of procedures necessary for its entering in force.
