Latvia Wants all Eastern Partnership Countries to be Represented at Riga Summit at Highest Level, Foreign Minister Says

Latvia would like all countries participating in the European Union’s Eastern Partnership program to be represented at the forthcoming Eastern Partnership summit in Riga at the highest level, Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics said in Minsk on Sunday.

“We would very much like all our partners and Eastern Partners to be represented in Riga at the highest level,” Mr. Rinkevics said, speaking during a news show broadcast by Belarusian state television network ONT. “And I see a good potential here. We still have time to work on invitations. Who comes and who doesn’t come is up to the participants themselves, of course.”

According to him, the Latvian organizers are drawing up the summit’s schedule. Mr. Rinkevics said that the event would open up new horizons in relations between the EU and Belarus. He noted that the “positive process of the resolution of certain issues” had begun as far back as 2013.

The possibility of liberalizing the EU’s visa regime with Belarus may be discussed during the summit and so may programs of educational, environmental and economic cooperation, Mr. Rinkevics said. He added that there was a “good” potential for developing cooperation with Belarus.
